Angle grinders are on every fabrication site, and grinding and cutting discs cause a large share of workshop injuries. Most of these accidents are avoidable. These habits keep your crew safe and help your discs last longer.
1. Use the right disc for the job
Cutting discs are thin and designed to cut with their edge only. Grinding discs are thicker and built for side pressure. Never grind with the face of a cutting disc – it can shatter.
2. Check the speed rating
Every disc is marked with a maximum operating speed (RPM and m/s). It must be equal to or higher than the no-load speed of the grinder. A disc that spins faster than its rating can burst.
3. Look for the standard and the expiry date
Quality bonded abrasives are made to EN 12413. Resin-bonded discs also carry an expiry date, because the bond weakens over time. Do not use discs that are past their date.
4. Inspect before mounting
Check for cracks, chips, dampness or damage. If a disc has been dropped, bin it. Store discs flat, in a dry place and in their original packaging.
5. Keep the guard on
The guard is there to deflect fragments if a disc breaks. Position it between the disc and the operator, and never remove it to reach awkward spots.
6. Mount correctly and run it up first
Use the flanges supplied with the grinder and tighten the locking nut properly. After fitting a new disc, let the grinder run at full speed for about a minute, pointed away from people, before starting work.
7. Wear the right PPE
- Safety glasses and a face shield
- Hearing protection
- Leather gloves and long sleeves
- A dust mask or respirator where needed
8. Let the disc do the work
Forcing the grinder overheats the disc, glazes it and increases the risk of kickback. Keep a firm two-handed grip, avoid jamming the disc in a cut, and watch where the sparks go – keep flammables well away.
