Industrial plugs and sockets are built for tough site conditions, and their colours tell you the voltage at a glance. Using the right one keeps tools running and people safe.
What the colours mean
- Blue: 230V single phase, for general power tools and equipment. See our 230V industrial plug and 230V industrial socket.
- Yellow: 110V, used with site transformers for safer hand tools and lighting in shipyards and wet areas. See the 110V IP44 plug and 110V IP44 socket.
- Red: 3-phase, for heavy equipment such as large welding machines and compressors. See the 3-phase 16A plug and 3-phase 16A socket.
Plugs of different voltages have different pin positions, so a 110V tool cannot be plugged into a 230V socket by mistake.
What does IP44 mean?
IP44 means the plug or socket is protected against solid objects larger than 1 mm and against water splashing from any direction. For outdoor work, open decks and damp workshops, choose IP44 industrial plugs and IP44 sockets.
Safety tips
- Check cables, plugs and sockets before use, and replace any that are cracked or burnt.
- Do not overload a 16A socket with several heavy tools.
- Keep connections off wet floors and away from standing water.
- Use proper cable ties to keep cable runs tidy and out of walkways.
- For work in tanks and dark spaces, use a sturdy hand lamp.
