Arc welding throws out intense light, UV and infrared radiation, sparks and spatter. The right face protection depends on how long you weld, where you weld and what else you do on the job. Here is a quick guide to the main types.
1. Welding headshield (helmet)
A welding headshield is worn on the head and keeps both hands free. It is the best choice for welders who weld for long periods, whether stick, MIG or TIG. Look for a light shell, a comfortable headgear and a standard lens size so replacement lenses are easy to find. For heavy use or when you need to add a hard hat, a headshield with aluminium bracket is a sturdy option.
2. Welding hand shield
A welding hand shield is held in front of the face by its handle. It is ideal for tack welding, short jobs, supervisors and QC inspectors who need to look at the arc for a moment, and visitors in the workshop. Because one hand holds the shield, it is not suited to long welding runs.
3. Leather welding mask
A leather welding mask is soft, flexible and resists sparks well. Welders often prefer it for work in tight spaces such as tanks, double bottoms and pipe racks, where a rigid helmet gets in the way.
4. Grinding face shield (not for welding)
A clear grinding face shield protects against flying particles when grinding, cutting and chipping slag. It has no welding filter, so never use it to look at a welding arc. Fit it to a face shield bracket and always wear safety goggles underneath.
Do not forget the lens and cover glass
- Filter lens: the dark welding lens protects your eyes from the arc. Choose the shade that suits your process and current.
- Clear cover glass: a 4″ x 2″ clear glass sits in front of the filter lens and takes the spatter. Change it as soon as it becomes pitted or cloudy; it is far cheaper than replacing the filter.
Quick guide
- Long welding runs: headshield
- Tack welding, inspection, short jobs: hand shield
- Tight or confined spaces: leather welding mask
- Grinding and cutting: grinding face shield plus goggles
