Most MIG welding problems, from an unstable arc to porosity, trace back to worn or mismatched torch consumables. They are cheap to replace, so knowing what each part does and when to change it saves time and rework.
Contact tip
The contact tip passes welding current into the wire. As it wears, the hole becomes oval and the arc starts to wander or the wire sticks. Change it when you see an erratic arc, wire burnback or spatter build-up you cannot clean off. Always match the tip size to your wire diameter.
Gas nozzle
The gas nozzle directs shielding gas over the weld pool. Spatter stuck inside the nozzle disturbs the gas flow and causes porosity. Clean it regularly and replace it when it is dented, cracked or badly clogged.
Gas diffuser and tip holder
The gas diffuser spreads the gas evenly and holds the contact tip on many torches, while a tip holder does the same job on others. Loose or overheated holders cause poor current transfer, so check they are tight and not discoloured.
Liner
The torch liner guides the wire from the feeder to the tip. A dirty or kinked liner causes jerky wire feed. Blow it out with dry air when you change the wire spool and replace it if feeding stays rough.
Match the consumables to your torch
Binzel, Tweco, OTC, Tregaskiss and Esab type torches each use their own threads and sizes, and the parts are not interchangeable. Check your torch type before ordering. Our EVO-MIG range lists each part by torch type, from tips and nozzles to complete MIG welding torches.
Quick checklist
- Erratic arc or wire sticking: change the contact tip
- Porosity: clean or replace the nozzle, check gas flow
- Overheating at the front end: tighten or replace the diffuser or tip holder
- Jerky wire feed: clean or replace the liner
