Knot, Bevel or Cup Wire Brush? Choosing the Right Wire Brush for Your Grinder

Wire brushes are the fastest way to clean welds, remove rust and strip paint. Each shape is made for a different job.

Knot wire brush

A knot wire brush has twisted bundles of wire, making it aggressive and long-lasting. Use it for removing heavy slag between weld passes, thick rust and mill scale.

Bevel wire brush

A bevel wire brush has angled wires that reach into corners, fillet welds and edges. It is ideal for cleaning weld joints before and after welding.

Cup wire brush

A cup wire brush covers a wide flat area quickly. Use it for surface preparation, paint removal and cleaning large plates.

Hand wire brushes

For small jobs and hard-to-reach spots, a hand brush is often quicker. Use a steel wire brush on carbon steel and a separate stainless steel wire brush on stainless.

Important: keep stainless separate

A brush used on carbon steel leaves tiny iron particles behind. On stainless steel these cause rust spots. Always keep dedicated brushes for stainless work.

Safety tips

  • Check the brush speed rating is equal to or higher than your grinder speed.
  • Wires can fly off at high speed: wear safety goggles with a face shield, and gloves.
  • Keep the grinder guard on and let the brush do the work without heavy pressure.
