Oxy-Fuel Cutting Safety: Flashback Arrestors, Check Valves and Hose Care

Gas cutting and heating are everyday jobs in shipyards and fabrication shops, but a flashback or a leaking hose can turn serious quickly. A few safety devices and simple daily checks make a big difference.

What is a flashback?

A flashback happens when the flame burns back into the torch and hoses, usually because of a blocked nozzle, wrong gas pressures or gas mixing in the hose. If it reaches the regulator or cylinder, the result can be a fire or explosion.

Flashback arrestors

A flashback arrestor stops a flame travelling back towards the cylinder. Fit them on both the oxygen and fuel gas lines. They must be kept in good working order, so have them tested regularly. We offer flashback arrestor servicing in Singapore.

Reverse flow check valves

A reverse flow check valve stops gas flowing backwards into the wrong hose, which is the main cause of gas mixing. Fit check valves at the torch end and replace them if they leak or stick.

Daily checks before you light up

  • Inspect hoses for cuts, burns and cracks. Secure connections with a proper hose clamp, never wire.
  • Leak-test connections with soapy water, never a flame.
  • Check the cutting torch valves close fully and the cutting nozzle is clean and undamaged. Use a nozzle cleaner to clear spatter.
  • Purge each line briefly before lighting, and light with a flint lighter, not a cigarette lighter.
  • When shutting down, close the cylinder valves and bleed the lines.

Protect yourself too

Wear safety goggles with the right shade, welding gloves and flame-resistant clothing. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and clear combustibles from the area.
