Good welds start with good fit-up and end with a quick check of size and profile. A few simple gauges let welders and QC inspectors catch problems before they become repairs.
Before welding: fit-up
- Hi-Lo gauge: a Hi-Lo welding gauge checks internal misalignment (high-low) between two pipe ends, plus root gap and bevel.
- Pipe alignment gauge: a pipe alignment gauge helps line up pipe and fittings before tacking.
- Taper feeler gauge: a welding taper gauge measures root gap quickly.
- Angle gauge: an angle measuring gauge checks bevel angles.
After welding: size and profile
- Cam-type gauge: a cam-type weld gauge measures reinforcement height, fillet weld size, throat, undercut depth and bevel angle in one tool.
- Undercut gauge: a weld groove and undercut gauge checks undercut and groove depth.
- Pocket weld gauge: a pocket angle weld gauge is handy for quick fillet checks on site.
Seeing the hard-to-reach side
A welding inspection mirror lets you view the back of a pipe weld or the inside of a joint without moving the workpiece. Pair it with a good LED torchlight.
Tips for reliable measurements
- Clean slag and spatter off the weld first with a chipping hammer and wire brush.
- Hold the gauge square to the weld and read it at eye level.
- Always check results against the drawing or welding procedure, which sets the acceptance limits.
