Plasma Cutting Consumables: When to Change the Electrode and Nozzle

Plasma cutting is fast and clean, but only when the torch consumables are in good shape. Worn parts cause wide, bevelled cuts, more dross and can damage the torch. Here is what to look for.

The main consumables

  • Electrode: carries the current. It has a small insert in the tip that wears away with each start.
  • Nozzle (tip): squeezes the arc into a narrow, hot jet. The hole must stay round for a clean cut.
  • Swirl ring and shield cup: control the gas flow and protect the front of the torch.

Signs it is time to change

  • The cut becomes wider, more angled or leaves more dross.
  • The arc is hard to start or wanders.
  • The nozzle hole is oval, burnt or has spatter stuck to it.
  • There is a deep pit in the centre of the electrode. Many torch makers suggest replacing it when the pit is about 1 mm deep; check your torch manual.

Change the electrode and nozzle together when possible: a new nozzle on a worn electrode will wear out quickly.

How to make consumables last longer

  • Use clean, dry compressed air. Moisture and oil shorten consumable life; a portable air dryer helps.
  • Set the right air pressure and current for the plate thickness.
  • Pierce at the correct height and avoid long pilot arc time in the air.
  • Do not drag the nozzle on the plate unless the torch is designed for drag cutting.

Match the torch type

Consumables are not interchangeable between torch types. We stock parts for common torches: P80, PT-31 and SP-40. Check your torch model before ordering.
