Rigger, Impact, Anti-Cut or Rubber Coated? Choosing Work Gloves for the Yard

Hand injuries are common on any work site, and no single glove protects against everything. Matching the glove to the job keeps hands safe without making work harder.

Rigger gloves: general handling

Rigger gloves are tough leather gloves for lifting, carrying, rigging and general handling of steel, pipes and timber. They give good grip and protect against rough surfaces and splinters.

Impact gloves: crush and knock protection

Impact gloves have padded or rubber guards on the back of the hand and fingers. They protect against knocks, pinch points and dropped loads, which makes them popular for rigging, heavy lifting and work around machinery.

Anti-cut gloves: sharp edges

Anti-cut gloves are made from cut-resistant fibres. Use them when handling sheet metal, freshly cut plate, glass or anything with sharp edges. Check the cut rating on the label (for example under EN 388) to match the level of risk.

Rubber-coated gloves: oily and wet work

Rubber-coated gloves give a firm grip on oily, wet or slippery parts and keep hands cleaner. They suit engine room work, maintenance and handling greasy components.

Welding is different

For welding and cutting, use proper welding gloves that resist heat and spatter. Read our welding gloves guide for details.

Tips

  • Choose the right size: loose gloves catch on things and tight gloves tire the hands.
  • Never wear gloves near rotating parts such as drill chucks, where they can be pulled in.
  • Replace gloves that are torn, worn through or soaked in oil or chemicals.
