When an arc is unstable or a cable gets hot, many welders blame the machine. Often the real problem is a loose connector, a worn earth clamp or a tired electrode holder. These parts carry the full welding current, so they matter.
Cable connectors
A welding cable connector joins two lengths of cable. A loose or undersized connector creates resistance, which means heat and voltage drop. Choose a connector rated for your cable size, crimp or fit it properly, and use female and male panel connectors that match your machine. For heavy currents, use a heavy-duty connector.
Earth clamps
The earth (return) clamp completes the circuit. Clamp it on clean, bare metal as close to the weld as practical.
- A standard earth clamp suits light and medium work.
- A G-type earth clamp screws down tightly for high currents and gouging.
- A magnetic earth clamp is quick to place on steel structures.
A poor earth connection causes arc wander, hard starts and stray arc strikes on the job.
Electrode holders
An electrode holder should grip the rod firmly and have intact insulation. Replace it if the jaws are burnt, the insulation is cracked or it gets hot in normal use.
Quick checks
- Feel for hot spots along the cable after a weld run (with gloves on).
- Look for damaged insulation and repair or replace it, never just tape over deep cuts.
- Keep connections clean and tight.
- Store rods properly in an electrode storage tube so they stay dry.
