Eye injuries are among the most common injuries in fabrication and shipyard work, and most are caused by small flying particles. Choosing the right eye protection for each task is simple once you know what each type is for.
Safety spectacles
Safety spectacles protect against particles coming from the front and sides. They are light and comfortable for general work such as assembly, fitting and moving around the workshop.
Safety goggles
Safety goggles seal around the eyes, so dust and particles cannot get in from the top, bottom or sides. Choose goggles for grinding, chipping slag, wire brushing and any dusty or splashing work. If you wear prescription glasses, look for goggles that fit over them.
Add a face shield for grinding and cutting
When using an angle grinder, a grinding face shield on a face shield bracket protects the whole face from sparks and broken disc fragments. A face shield is extra protection, not a replacement: always wear goggles or spectacles underneath.
Welding needs a filter lens
Ordinary goggles, spectacles and clear face shields do not protect against the arc. For welding, use a helmet or hand shield with a dark welding lens of the right shade, protected by a clear cover glass. See our welding face protection guide for more.
Keep it in good condition
- Replace eyewear that is scratched, pitted or cracked: it reduces vision and may not stop an impact.
- Clean lenses with water and a soft cloth, not a dirty rag.
- Store goggles in a bag or box so the lens is not scratched by tools.
- Keep spare pairs on site for visitors and new workers.
