Compressed air powers grinders, gouging torches, plasma cutters and many other tools on site. It is also a hazard: a hose that comes loose under pressure can whip around violently. Good fittings and simple checks prevent most problems.
Use the right fittings
Every joint should use fittings made for air hose, such as an air hose tail or air hose adapter that matches the hose size and thread. Mismatched or improvised fittings are a common cause of leaks and blow-offs.
Clamp hoses properly
Secure hose tails with a proper clamp, never with wire or tape. A double-bolt hose clamp grips evenly on larger hoses, and a stainless steel heavy-duty hose clamp resists corrosion in marine environments.
Fit whip check arrestors
A whip check arrestor is a steel cable that links across a hose connection. If the coupling fails, it stops the hose from whipping. Fit them across hose-to-hose and hose-to-tool connections on larger air lines.
Keep the air dry
Water in the air line rusts tools, washes out lubrication and shortens plasma and gouging consumables. A portable air dryer near the point of use removes moisture. Drain compressor tanks and filters regularly too.
Daily checks
- Inspect hoses for cuts, bulges and worn covers.
- Check clamps and fittings are tight before opening the valve.
- Close the valve and release pressure before disconnecting a tool.
- Never point compressed air at yourself or anyone else, or use it to clean clothing.
- Route hoses away from walkways and sharp edges.
