Tanks, double bottoms, void spaces and engine rooms are dark, tight and often wet. Good portable lighting is essential for safe work and good quality, and the wrong lighting can itself become a hazard.
Hand lamps for steady work light
A hand lamp gives a steady light that can be hung or placed close to the work. Look for a strong metal guard to protect the bulb and a good bulb holder. An LED bulb runs cooler and uses less power than an old filament bulb.
Use the right supply voltage
Inside steel tanks and wet areas, many sites require reduced-voltage supply (such as 110V) for portable equipment. Use matching 110V IP44 plugs and sockets, and check cables for damage before each use. Our industrial plugs guide explains the colour codes.
LED torchlights for inspection and backup
A rechargeable LED torchlight or LED torchlight is ideal for inspection, moving through dark spaces and as backup if the main lighting fails. Every person entering a confined space should carry one.
Warning lights
A rotating warning light marks work areas, manholes and entry points so others know work is in progress.
Safety tips
- Follow your site permit-to-work rules for confined space entry.
- Keep cables away from sharp edges, hot work and standing water.
- Do not cover lamps or leave them against flammable materials.
- Charge torchlights before each shift.
